Getting The Most From Your Internet Speed

September 12th, 2011

It-s commonly believed the faster your internet connection (phone line, DSL, or cable), the better your performance. And, while this is true to some extent ” it-s not totally accurate. Why? Because there-s other factors to consider giving your internet connection a boost in speed that may have nothing to do with your internet connection itself. For example:

Run a full anti-malware scan on your PC regularly ” while surfing the internet, viruses, malware, and spyware can cause your internet connection to slow to a crawl. Those harmful programs can get access to your browser settings and suck your bandwidth dry; causing slower connections.

Also, if your computer slows down ” your internet connection slows down. Remember, your connection depends on the health of your computer. Therefore, regular check-ups and cleanings are necessary.

If you have a ton of downloaded files from months back you haven-t used ” delete it. It-s using up valuable RAM space that can be used to boost your connection speed. Run a registry cleaner and defragment your hard drive to remove digital garbage.

Next, you may want to think about upgrading your RAM (Random Access Memory) space to accommodate overall faster performance. Everything running on your computer ” even silently in the background ” requires a certain amount of ram to operate; including open and active internet browsers.

Unfortunately, most computer manufacturers deliberately give your computer less RAM than you need to save on cost and encourage spending on RAM upgrades (ironic, huh?). Luckily, it-s fairly inexpensive to get this upgrade and should increase your internet speed.

Finally, when you-ve exhausted all options above you may want to consider switching service if the problem persists any further. But again, it-s a last resort. It-s also possible it could be a hardware issue like a faulty wiring, a bad receiver, and weak signal.
